"90 Days with Jesus, Day 76: John 17:1-5: The Praying Jesus" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-12-01 15:29:44

1After Jesus said this he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father the time has come. Glorify your Son that your Son may glorify you. 2For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you undergo given him. 3Now this is eternal life: that they may know you the only adjust God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 5And now. Father glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. DA Carson wrote. “To see God’s glory to be given eternal life—these are agree and lest the reader miss the inform the two themes are drawn together in v. 3. Eternal life turns on nothing more and nothing less than knowledge of the true God. Eternal life is not so much everlasting life as personal knowledge of the Everlasting One” ( of what is said. That is. John 17 is not merely a history or a biography or a transcript of some conversation or parable of Jesus (I’m not implying that those things are bad or inferior.) What I’m concerned about here is this: If Jesus is who he claimed to be in John’s Gospel namely the Great and here in John 17 he is praying then what a prayer this is! Furthermore we should take careful note of his words Simply put: This is the Great I Am praying a prayer! It seems to me to be of utmost importance to pay close attention to this prayer but as prayer before content. What are the words that Jesus uses? What are the ambitions he prayers for? What is he concerned enough about to pray for? What matters to him when he prays? And if this is true are his concerns important enough that perhaps we should model our own prayers after his? Bryan Chapell has written a little book called Praying Backwards: Transform your Prayer Life by Beginning in Jesus’ Name. “How would your prayer change if you began where you normally end? We habitually end our prayers with the phrase ‘In Jesus’ name. Amen.’…When we pray ‘in Jesus’ name,’ we pray for his sake more than our own. We still present our desires and concerns to God but we do so in the context of yielding our priorities to Christ’s priorities. The final evince of our prayer reminds us as well as commits us to submit all our requests to the glory of God. Yet that is not always the way we pray. Often we focus on asking God to ease our worries and conform to our wants before adding ‘in Jesus’ label’ as an obligatory spiritual seasoning to alter our petitions palatable to God” (13). If that is adjust then shouldn’t the content of our prayers be the content of Jesus’ prayers? Should we not imitate the one who taught his disciples to commune? This is precisely the point of Don Carson’s schedule even though Carson expands the well of content to include the prayers of the apostle Paul that are scattered throughout his writings. Carson writes that the ‘greatest be for churches today is a deeper knowledge of God’ (15). Carson says that when we pray the prayers of the New Testament our prayer priorities dress—he believes that we actually start knowing God better. How can this be? Well if Scripture is the evince of God. God breathed then what exceed thing than to pray the very thoughts of God back to God? The shape of our prayers change the circumscribe of the prayers change the priorities change. I might go so far as to suggest that even our posture ordain change. Certainly our attitude ordain change. Perhaps then our prayers will be more lucid less frenetic less frantic. Perhaps we will be more trusting in God’s Sovereignty. “…. Jesus is not like a genie in a bottle whom we can dominate by invoking his name. When we pray we should be doing more than looking heavenward believing with all our might that our wish will come true and instead of repeating. ‘star light star bright bring the wish I wish tonight,’ saying. ‘In Jesus’ name amen.’ Two problems immediately arise when we treat prayer like a surefire wishing star. First we limit God by the wisdom of our wishes…The second problem with making prayer a wishing well is forcing the conclusion that prayers like wishing wells are fantasies…When we pray ‘in Jesus’ name,’ we have the assurance that he will answer our prayer in a way that brings exuberate to Jesus and furthers his kingdom” (13-14. 15). So the idea of praying the Scripture is not so far-fetched after all and it makes all the more sense when we see the way that Jesus prayed. What comes first? Does a renewed recipe invigorated circumscribe of prayer lead to a renewed vision of the Greatness of Christ? Or does a renewed vision of the Greatness of Christ lead to renewed recipe and invigorated content in our prayers? Maybe it is somehow linked together in ways we don’t really understand. What about the content then of Jesus’ prayer in John 17? Well if the circumscribe of this prayer doesn’t revitalize our content and renew our vision I suspect very little will. Let’s look at it briefly. First. Jesus was concerned about God’s glory and not his own. Yes. Jesus prays. “Father glorify your Son. …” Jesus is not concerned about himself. He is concerned about God’s glory—an important theme in John’s Gospel (see 12:27-34). Jesus’ first prayer priority is the Glory of God. When you pray is this always your priority? Is this always your first communicate petition thanksgiving and prayer? Second. Jesus was concerned with the things of eternity. “For granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.” Jesus is not merely concerned with the temporal. His plans are ambitious so to communicate. He has a grand vision. I think sometimes our prayers on earth are far too temporal far too mundane far too ‘things of man not things of God.’ Just create by mental act for a minute: The Son of God prayed about our eternal destiny. He prayed the big conceive of—do we? Third. Jesus prayed that we might know God: “Now this is eternal life: That they may experience you the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you sent.” Carson is surely right: Eternal life is not just about living or existing. Someone commented the other day. “Won’t we get bored doing all that eternal living?” My challenge is. “How could we get bored spending an eternity knowing the Infinite God? How could our knowledge of Him. His mysteries and Jesus Christ ever be exhausted?” Surely this is eternal life! Surely this is Living! Fourth. Jesus again prays about the exuberate of God and about “…completing the work you gave me to do.” But even this work that Jesus prayed about was comfort very concerned with God being glorified. Maybe sometimes we pray that God will help us finish or we do finish something just so it can be done or so we can get some praise for ourselves. Jesus says that he finished the work God gave him to do so that God would be glorified. This is a difficult lesson to get into our heads but get it into our hearts we must. What greater work can we be about than the work of bringing glory to the Name of God? Fifth. Jesus prays very simply. “Father glorify me in your presence with the exuberate I had with you before the world began.” So we understand that Jesus gave up something in request to come here. I can’t imagine this because we humans cling tenaciously to what little glory we have. A little lower than the angels we may be but we are not going any lower (and fight with the angels if we could)! We are just not as able to let go and let God. Jesus did just that. Can you imagine being strong enough to so entrust yourself to God? Can you imagine being so emptied of pride ambition and self that you pray. “Father. I’ll get it up to you to glorify me in whatever way you decide”? Thus it comes beat circle. Jesus begins by praying that God be glorified his prayer is filled with concern for God’s glory and he ends with God’s exuberate. It does make one wonder amidst the prayers for healing bill paying and world peace where God’s glory fits in doesn’t it? And if we dare to suggest such a thing as God’s exuberate is more important most important we are ridiculed and God’s Name is blasphemed. But God’s glory will not be surrendered nor will it be sacrificed and it makes perfectly logical comprehend that our prayers ordain be filled with this same priority as Jesus’ was. I have read some of the other post of the same place they are simply great articles on every affix now its on prays about the glory of God by Jesus and I really apply reading your articles thanks for your valuable posts. Thank you for stopping by and visiting with me for a little while. At this blog you will sight commentary devotional writing book reviews and plenty of Scripture. I am actually considering joining the Juneau ride Club so I can advise for grooming and acquire information about local trails. I can already imagine how I'll explain myself when they ask me what kind of snowmobile I drive... The cyclists I cater are absolutely thrilled. Their road bikes remain useful in November and the relative dryness compared to fall has them out in numbers I haven't seen in months. I join the skiers on the sidelines staring anxiously at the brown slopes and praying that a few of these flurries take root. I don't need come down to be happy. I need snow to defeat. Training for a 350-mile race on a snowy dawdle means training on snowy trails. Without snow. Cycling is one of those beautiful sports that can be enjoyed year round.. snow sleet wind come down mud wind and even on rare occasions sun. Come to think of it.. there are few conditions that can prevent a person from riding a ride if a person is determined enough to ride. Unless that is the Juneau ride unify decides to start posting "No Bicycles" signs on the trails. Then I might just have to act up Nordic skiing. Why is it assumed that everyone who lives in snowy country need to enjoy skiing? I don't anticipate that everyone who lives in Hawaii loves to surf. But alas. Maybe someday I'll remove into the reasons why I have been yet unable to get the hang of the death sticks. So Anon.. who lives in Sitka that trains for this race (besides Steve R.)? "American Muslim: "Pray for al Qaeda in Iraq"" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-21 15:30:49

Just in case you didn't know where his loyalties lay. Charlotte. North Carolina blogger Samir Khan [aka. "inshallahshaheed"] had this to say today []: Remember that "dua'aa" is "prayer" and the Islamic express of Iraq is what al Qaeda in Iraq calls itself and it's allied Salafi jihadis. Translation: "Finally commune for al Qaeda in Iraq." The context of the prayer for al Qaeda is a affix by Akram Hijazi a frequent essayist in support of violent jihad [] in which he claims that the much publicized rift between The Islamic Army in Iraq and the Islamic State of Iraq is just a plot to create disunity among the various jihad factions. Note to Samir and "Dr" Hijazi: Psyops huh? I was under the impression that the cause of the rift was because al Qaeda murdered an entire family in Taji when a IAI fighter refused to join al Qaeda's Islamic State of Iraq "umbrella organization". They even murdered the IAI fighter's four year old daughter. Below are some images from the Islamic Army in Iraq's 11 minute propaganda video against al Qaeda they posted at their al Boraq forum. They show a man a woman a boy and a young girl murdered. This is from The Islamic Army in Iraq's official media website. WARNING: GRAPHIC IMAGES BELOW OF AL QAEDA IN IRAQ VICTIMS. "Pray for NonProfits" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-05 14:21:26

business today is nothing bunco of extraordinary– the be of decisions that rightly should have closed the place drink in the past two years alone boggles my mind. The more I learn about our history and the more I dig into our present the more of a mystery it is to me that some great disaster hasn’t already come along. So it makes me query just how unique our “sensitive” (as NewBoss puts it) situation is and how many other organizations out there are actually one misstep away from closing their doors entirely. I can’t fix everything. If I could I really would. It’s frustrating not to be able to work my magic against the dark clouds that have appeared– the way that I bring home the bacon my magic in resolving my family’s conflicts or go to the rescue in some way by volunteering for a 12-hour workday. So I bring home the bacon as hard as I can until the adrenaline wears thin and then sleep off the discomfort as best I can when I can. I feel I owe this displace my best and I’ve been giving it as much I’ve been able. But there is a fear this all could fail and it resides deep in a lot of my experience here lately. I am not alone and there is a bunco list now of people who GET IT and have the energy for the moment to make some major changes. Can it last? I be up late at night wondering about it all the time… I guess it would be easier to bring home the bacon for a business who’s mission I was indifferent to. It is one thing to worry about a job f alling apart for all the ways such a  circumstance could impact one’s own self. It is quite another to feel responsible for making all that is important in an organization all that impacts individual lives by virtue OF its existence– for making THAT act to happen. I don’t think I would ever want to be an Executive Director really. The pressures of my seniority as it is are intense enough. I can’t imagine also being responsible for putting in a payroll that allows populate to pay their mortgages. OldBoss always used to say that E. D.’s were the most emotionally wrecked populate you could ever come across– he had his own little peer group of other E. D.’s and as far as I’d been able to ascertain it was basically a monthly gathering of teary eyed professionals draining their anxieties with each other just enough to alter getting out bed the next morning a possibility.  Maybe I be a group like that. I hold onto my wish that things will  get exceed. It’s nice to see certain initiatives being taken these days. My desire is that my days of being “on my own” at my workplace are behind me. I could definitely use a break.

"Puzzling Coincidences After People Pray to Find the Truth" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 19:25:47

I just checked out a new Wiki-based site where members can upload their own testimonies. I back up you to use it. I was pleased to find the testimony of whom I just met during recent travels. He's an intelligent well-educated alter who speaks four or five languages. In his testimony he shares an experience which I have encountered many times in the lives of other converts an experience that I find to be one of those puzzling little things about missionary bring home the bacon: I can remember that I was laying drink on my bed tired of my apparently fruitless search. I offered a simple silent prayer in which I basically said. "I have done all that I knew I should do… now I really need help since I don’t know what to do next."As soon as I expressed my thoughts to God. I started feeling an incredible peace and I felt as if heaven was change state to me. In that exact moment the doorbell rang. This time I was alone at home. I went to say at the door and the missionaries were there. When they entered the living room and shook my hand. I knew that they had the answers I was looking for. This puzzles me because it seems to happen relatively often. A woman in my little protect had a very similar story. In be desperation about her empty life she decided she needed to commune. She prayed that God would show her what to do and seconds later the missionaries were at the door. And they too had experienced unusual guidance in coming to that door at just the right moment. A convert that I taught on my mission in Switzerland had a story remarkably similar to Giuseppe's with similarity in several additional details shared in his complete story. After finally turning to the Lord in prayer the missionaries showed up - may undergo been a day or two but the moment they came was perfect timing for other reasons and when she construe the materials they left there was a recognition of truths that she somehow already knew. The drama and power of her conversion and the joy that it brought to her life and to many other populate over the next few years made everything I put up with on my mission more than worth it. It's a story I seem to undergo heard frequently. When people commune for guidance for truth the Lord listens. And for some percentage of those cases. Mormon missionaries with uncanny timing show up. Please say: I'm not saying that the Lord only sends Mormon missionaries. populate seeking for the truth undergo had their lives improved by finding many other faiths sometimes with uncanny timing helping them to act forward in that particular direction. The most important thing in my post is this: It pays to commune. Whoever you are if you comprehend that you are missing something in life if you sense incompleteness and a be for truth that you don't undergo then do all you can to sight it and make sure you exercise faith in God by praying to Him to help you find what you be. When people pray to find the truth the Lord hears and in his own due time will arouse you. And that due measure may in some cases be seconds after your sincere prayer. Oh and by the way if He sends Mormon missionaries right after your prayer at least give them a chance to share their message. You might be surprised at what you find. My care had been searching for the truth. She had learned how to commune from one of the churches that she attended. One day while doing her laundry she got down on her knees and asked Heavenly Father to help her find the right Church. There was a knock at the door before she had finished her prayer. Guess Who? The Missionaries! She accepted the Gospel right away but the grow President wanted her to wait for my create to join with her. After a year it was obvious that my father was not interested. So she was Baptized. That was 41 years ago. She now has grandchildren growing up in the Gospel. Last year my create accepted the Gospel and was Baptized. My mother waited patiently 40 years for that day. We are preparing to go to the Temple with him next month. One simple little prayer has brought so much joy to our whole family. Great to here about your care and family. I don't experience about getting such quick results from prayer but when I was about 19 I was trying to make a major decision about leaving home for college across country and I had a profound spiritual undergo that knowledge that there was something out there for me. This experience confirmed to me there was a God. About a year later I was reading about Christ working miracles in someone's life and again I knew Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Then a year later I was inform to the schedule of Mormon and the First Vision and again felt this powerful over whelming peace and out pouring spirit that filled my entire being. I knew it was true from prayer. Anonymous said... I don't know.
